“You know, as we grow up, we get this mentality of “Eid isn’t even fun anymore” because we do not get money anymore. But Eid being fun honestly depends on US, NOT Eid. Eid didn’t do anything wrong.”
Khadijah D., 2023.
I have skipped the remaining reminders I have on Laylat al-Qadr in order to remind us in good time to start planning something for Eid.
Eid al-Fitr is approaching. It is one of the only two festivals that Muslims are allowed to celebrate; it is an opportunity to break the cycle of misplacing our celebrations into unislamic festivals; an opportunity to instill in the younger generation love for the religion.
Think of all of the (permissible) ways you would celebrate an occasion and do them this Eid. Put on your best clothes, host family and friends, gift one another and spread positivity. And if we would rather outsource this fun, alhamdulillāh, there are organizations that plan halal gatherings for Eid where the whole family can have a good time.
I pray that henceforth, we don’t make jokes about sleeping in on the day of Eid because WE have made it boring for ourselves.
