The content we consume on social media lead us to sin in so many ways, and one of those ways is gossip. We follow so many personalities who share their lives with us, but if following a particular person on social media makes us talk bad about them, then it is not worth whatever we are on their page for.
Recipes? We can find tons of them on YouTube.
Fashion and decor? Pinterest.
And if we just want to keep up with their lives then we should probably do more with ours since we have so much free time.
Whatever bad we say of them is sinful whether or not it’s true; Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said: “Do you know what ghībah (backbiting) is?” They said, “Allāh and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Saying something about your brother that he dislikes.” It was said, “What if what I say about my brother is true?” He said, “If what you say is true then you have backbited about him, and if it is not true, then you have slandered him.”

It is time to review the content we have on our social media timelines and take out the garbage. Let us put our ‘unfollow’ and ‘mute’ buttons to good use, and protect ourselves from falling into ghībah (backbiting) and buhtān (slander).
“Neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allāh. Verily, Allāh is the One Who forgives and accepts repentance, Most Merciful”
Surah Al-Hujurāt, āyah 12.
