Tabarruj (wanton display of beauty) is at an all time high because of social media. And by liking, commenting on and resharing photos and videos of women on the internet, we’re endorsing the act; we are agreeing that it is appropriate and encouraging them to do more. The more interaction their posts get, the more likely they are to keep sharing. If we cannot stop the spread of evil, the least we could do is not contribute to it.
Sometimes we share photos and videos of our (female) loved ones to show “love and appreciation”, but isn’t that paradoxical? Shouldn’t we protect each other from sin and transgression? Isn’t that the purest form of love?
“Help you one another in Al‑Birr and At‑Taqwa (virtue, righteousness and piety); but do not help one another in sin and transgression. And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.”
al-Maa’idah 5:2
And while the single like of a random ‘you’ is negligible to the thousands of likes on a person’s post, you would be protecting yourself from adding to your book of sins. (This applies to the posts of renowned people (like YouTubers and Bloggers) as well.)
We can appreciate beauty without promoting its public display.
